Over the past three years, Hawaii has become the closest state to passing a 0.05 blood alcohol concentration (BAC) law outside of Utah. This session will discuss the lessons learned from Hawaii's effort in passing the law and how coalitions can mobilize to support 0.05 BAC laws in their respective states. The participants will understand why a 0.05 BAC law is a reasonable limit to set and the evidence of support on how lowering the BAC is an effective strategy to reduce DUI-related crashes and fatalities. Participants will also learn steps to create an advocacy structure that builds supporters, leverages media opportunities, and educates the public and elected officials on the issue. The presenters will also share their lessons regarding their successes and challenges and their relevance to other coalitions interested in addressing DUI-related road safety.
